It was a hot and muggy day
The sky was raining too
The radio said Elvis Presley was dead
At the age of 42
Well I never knew the man
But his voice just spoke to me
When he stepped into the spotlight
He really was a sight to see

On August 16, 1977
Did he really die?  Did he really go to heaven?
The once and future king
Didn't seem to mean a thing
Until he died...

Well he tried to live up to it
But he never could find a way
What consumed his soul was his rock and roll
And he couldn't chase the demons away
And he said he was caught in a trap
And he said that he couldn't walk out
Encaged in his own glory
Until the man just finally gave out

Heroes come and go
But when they're dead and gone
The myth becomes a legend
And the legend keeps growing strong
So the king of rock and roll
Keeps growing day by day
And those that flock to Graceland
Will never go away

The long white limousine
Was slowly driving down
Through Elvis Presley Boulevard
People lined for miles around
It was a hot and muggy day
The sky was raining too
